At the beginning of the semester, Emanate hosted our annual Global Perspectives conference – a time where students and staff heard about the work that God is doing around the world. “Gate Crashers” was the theme, and throughout the week, students and staff alike were reminded that no matter what is going on in the world, whether the stories are encouraging or discouraging, God is the one who prevails. Jesus says,

“And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”

-NIV Matthew 16:18

Believers all over the world can be encouraged that God will overcome. One day, this will be reality.

“Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!’”

-NIV, Revelation 5:13

Hope is found not in the circumstances believers find themselves in but in the God who holds the circumstances. God is far above all that we can grasp with our finite minds, and all of life is about Him.

Even believers have the natural tendency to think that we are the one and only thing to be reckoned with. That is not the case. God uses each and every situation to bring glory to His name. Often from our human perspective, it seems that God is working too slowly, the wrong way, or at the wrong times. Yet we do not get to see the entire story or the big picture. Only God does.

If a believer decides that it is his job to break down those gates, he will fail. God’s job is to break down gates. He deserves all glory, not man. Only when we as believers come to terms with this fact will we truly find the strength and encouragement we need to persevere each day until our great God will build His church and “the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”
